Fugro is the world’s largest integrator of geotechnical, survey, subsea and geosciences services, with sales worth €2.6bn a year, 13,500 employees, and a presence in more than 70 countries. In the beginning of 2015 Gerko Baarslag was hired as the new CIO for a very challenging mission: to deliver world-class IT to the company and to enable Fugro to get more added value out of IT.

To reach those goals Baarslag introduced a cloud-first strategy. He has to make sure that employees of this multinational company can work anywhere and anytime, which is hard when applications and datacenters are spread around the world and are not optimally connected. With cloud-first strategy, Fugro has decided to first look at the possibilities cloud has to offer, instead of putting much effort and money into making their operating datacenters future-proof.”

In a company where a year ago cloud computing was hardly used, the Baarslag’s cloud-first strategy would lead eventually to a replacement of about 75% of the current IT infrastructure. Baarslag, who has a degree in sociology and extensive experience with cloud computing in different companies, is convinced cloud transition is rather about change management than IT. Which means that getting the right people engaged is more crucial for the success of the transition than finding the right IT solutions.
